Four simple steps when editing or preparing to repair your Windows registry are:
Save
Save a backup of your registry; this is very important. Saving a backup of all of your registry information is important because you might end up pulling something you didn't mean too; this is especially true if you are trying to do the fix yourself.
Scan
Scan your registry for any bad or invalid entries. Scanning your registry will let you know where you stand in order to begin the editing process and exactly how seriously your PC is in need of help.
Analyze
After scanning your registry you must analyze the scan results by determining which actions to take based on the information gathered during your scan. If you are using a software-based registry scanner then you will generally be given a list of registry errors along with suggested actions that need to be taken in order to fix the invalid registry entries. At this point you can choose to perform the suggested actions or you can decline to take any action. You are now read for the next step.
Fix
At this point you are ready to confirm your desire to fix the registry errors on your computer as specified in the previous step. Once confirmed, your registry scanner program will automatically perform the desired actions and fix your registry errors. If you later decide to revert back to your old registry settings you can do so via the registry backup that you made in the first step.
